Should I buy a boat

Hello!

I have gotten an opportunity to buy an old 38 ft sailing boat and I am shocked and don’t know what to do. I really like that boat but I know nothing about boats, sailing etc. I was looking on internet about boats and I found out that many people buy cheap boats, repair them and sell or use themselves.

I am looking for some sign to buy or not to buy. Maybe you can help me.

The boat is from 1970, polymer (fiberglass) hull. Costs around 3000 euros. Is it a normal price for such a boat? As far as I can see, they usually cost quite some more. Should I be careful about it?

I apologise, I am not discovering more details about it, since it is available for sale online and I don’t want to loose an opportunity.

I understand that repairing and maintaining it costs some money and I may have some amount to make it sailing. It is on the limit of my possibilities and that’s the reason I am hesitating. Are such old boats of any interest to people? Can I sell it after one year for more than I would spend on it?

No, don’t buy it.

3000€ for a 1970 38ft fiberglass sailboat is far too low - normal prices are much higher (often 20k–80k+ € depending on condition/model/location). Extremely cheap usually means serious hidden problems (rotten deck/core, osmosis, bad engine, rigging, keel issues).

As a complete beginner with limited budget, it’s high risk of becoming an expensive money pit. Old boats need constant money/time; repairs easily exceed purchase price fast.

Flipping for profit unlikely - market flooded with cheap old boats, value rarely rises.

Pass unless you get a professional survey first (but even then, probably not worth it for you now). Better to learn sailing first on rentals/clubs, save more, buy something ready later.
